"Crick" in the Neck

I woke up this morning with a mild "crick" in my neck. And it's gotten progressively worse during the course of the day. No head position is comfortable and at times I've even gasped in pain. So far I've tried dosing up on Advil, using a warm rice sock and taking a long nap, but nothing has helped. I've attempted to continue my daily activities as normally as possible despite the discomfort. I read that the worst thing you can do is stretch your neck as supposedly the "crick" is the result of an overstretched and strained ligament(s) as it is.

If you have any wonderful remedies, I'd love to hear them (for now and for the future).

***Update: Upon thinking further into the cause of the "crick," I remembered the haunted hayride that Dave and I went on the other night. When someone suddenly sprang out of the dark and startled me, I jumped pretty hard and felt a momentary strain in my neck that seemed to go away. So in essence what I have might be a touch of whip lash. Melanie used her physical therapist talents to try and "get the knots out" of the muscles which has given me some movement of my neck back. I guess I just have to continue what I've been doing and it should be better in a few days.
