Genealogy Weekend

This weekend was all about family.

Friday night I attended a Creative Memories party at Anitra's house. We had a great time visiting, snacking and creating a photo card.

Starting some photo safe albums and scrapbooks has been on my brain for some time now. Mom has some of the neatest photographs from her side of the family that I want to preserve. Several years ago Mom went to a CM party and purchased an album to begin documenting our family history. . Well....that project sort of fell to the wayside. Now there is some renewed interest and a sense of urgency on my part to get as much information as I can before it slips away. By the time Dave and I get married and have children, I will have the past documented and will be well-practiced at completing albums for our own family.

I purchased a few items to get started in organizing and protecting the photos that are in my possession. My mind is spinning thinking of all the fabulous albums I'm going to put together.

Today Mom and I drove my great aunt Annie Margaret and her husband Cliff from Lexington to Clio to have a mini reunion with my great uncle, Uncle Hubbard, and some other family members . Annie Margaret (80) and Hubbard (88) are my grandmother Josie's younger brother and sister. Grandmama passed away back in 1995. We missed Dave, but he had to go to work so he wasn't able to go.

We set out this morning around 9:30 and got there in time for a short visit before lunch. We had a very tasty country-style buffet lunch at a place called General McArthur's in Laurinburg compliments of Uncle Hubbard. Uncle Hubbard's sons, Donnie and Allen, and Allen's wife Leslie joined us from Uncle Hubbard's family. And from Grandmama Josie's family were both of her children, my Uncle Bud and Mom. Uncle Bud's wife Tricia, his daughter Debbie, Debbie's husband Eddie, and their daughter Erin also joined us. So there were 13 of us in total.

After lunch we went back to Uncle Hubbard's house to visit. We had such a nice time. We haven't been having our Christmas get-together for several years now since the Aunts and Uncles have gotten up in age. And it's really difficult to get everyone together when you have so many cousins whose families do their own things during the holidays. So today was special because it has been so long since my great aunt and great uncle have been together for a visit.

I've always been proud of the family I come from, an old Southern farming family. We enjoyed reminiscing about tasty family dishes we used to eat, several of which Mom and I have gotten the recipes for and intend to make for our Christmas get-together. The visit got me thinking even more about genealogy. I am on a mission now to get my hands on as much information as I can as soon as I can. This shouldn't be too hard because my cousin Donnie is obsessed with genealogy and has all of the information I want already documented.

I can't wait to get started. Fear of loss and a sense of urgency are great motivators. Now I have to try to unwind my mind so I can get some sleep. I'll keep you posted on my progress.

Ebay is a great place to buy CM stuff. I haven't done it yet, but I have friends who say that is the way to go. I know you are busy with family when you are up here, but we aren't that far from Laurinburg. Actually, our old house was even closer. I hope to see you when we are home for our short visit at Christmas. I am dying to meet Dave!
